SBA Express is not a separate loan program. It is an expedited delivery method inside 7(a): Express-authorized lenders underwrite with their own forms and procedures, and the SBA commits to responding on the loan number within 36 hours instead of reviewing the file itself. In exchange for that speed, the guarantee drops to 50% and the amount caps at $500,000. That trade — speed for guarantee — is the whole product, and understanding it tells you both when Express is the right lane and why “fast” Express files are often underwritten harder, not easier.
General information, not financial advice.
The 36 hours is the SBA’s response time on issuing the loan number under delegated authority. It is not application-to-funding time, and any page promising you money in 36 hours is misreading the program’s design. The lender still has to underwrite you, verify your documents and close the loan; on a clean file, realistic time to funding runs around two to three-plus weeks (lender-page consensus). What Express genuinely removes is the SBA’s own file review queue — one step in the process, owned step by step on how long a business loan takes.
On a standard 7(a) loan, the SBA guarantees 75–85% of the lender’s loss. On Express, it guarantees 50%. That single number explains the product’s behaviour:
| SBA Express | Standard 7(a) (for contrast) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum amount | $500,000 | $5 million |
| SBA guarantee | 50% | 75–85% |
| SBA response | Within 36 hours (loan number) | SBA reviews the file |
| Forms & underwriting | Lender’s own | SBA process |
| Products | Term loans and revolving lines | Term loans |
| Maximum rates | Prime + 6.5% (loans ≤ $50,000); prime + 4.5% (over $50,000) | Lower standard 7(a) spread caps |
| Maturity | Standard 7(a) caps: 25 years real estate, 10 years equipment, 7 years other | Same |
Express rate caps are higher than standard 7(a) caps — the speed costs something on price as well as on guarantee. Standard 7(a) guaranty fees apply by loan size and maturity; one standing exception readers ask about: the upfront guaranty fee is $0 for veteran-owned businesses on Express loans — the veteran angle in full lives on business loans for veterans.
Express eligibility is standard 7(a) eligibility — size standards, eligible business types, credit-elsewhere, and unlimited personal guarantees from owners of 20% or more — and the full screens live in the SBA eligibility hub. Two current facts belong inline here because so many Express pages still print the retired versions:
Lender-practice figures quoted across Express guides — personal credit scores around 650–680+, roughly two years in business, coverage around 1.15–1.25× — are lender practice, not SBA rules, and vary by lender. Express loans are available only through SBA Express-authorized lenders (not every 7(a) lender); SBA Lender Match is the routing tool, as in the general application guide.
Express wins when the loan is $500,000 or under, time genuinely matters, the file is clean enough that delegated underwriting helps rather than hurts, or you need an SBA-backed revolver. It loses when the loan is bigger than the cap, when the file needs the maximum guarantee behind it to get a yes, or when the lower standard 7(a) rate cap matters more than a few saved weeks. Neither lane relaxes the fundamentals: the lender still has to see repayment capacity, and a file that fails on cash flow fails in both processes — Express only changes how quickly the answer comes back. Price the payment either way with the business loan calculator.
How fast can I actually get an SBA Express loan? The SBA’s commitment is a response on the loan number within 36 hours of the lender’s submission, under delegated authority. Your lender still underwrites and closes the loan, so realistic funding on a clean file runs about two to three-plus weeks. “Funded in 36 hours” claims misstate what the 36 hours covers.
What is the maximum SBA Express loan amount? $500,000 — raised from $350,000 in 2022. Above that, you are in standard 7(a) territory, with its higher guarantee and its slower, SBA-reviewed process.
What credit score do I need for an SBA Express loan? The SBA sets no minimum score for Express. In practice, Express lenders commonly look for personal scores in the ~650–680+ range, around two years in business and coverage near 1.15–1.25× — but those are individual lender standards, not program rules, and they vary.
What is the difference between SBA Express and a standard 7(a) loan? Four things: the cap ($500,000 vs $5 million), the guarantee (50% vs 75–85%), who reviews the file (the lender under delegated authority, with a 36-hour SBA response, vs the SBA itself), and paperwork (lender’s own forms vs the SBA process). Pricing caps differ too — Express allows higher maximum spreads. Everything else — eligibility, maturities, guarantees from owners — is standard 7(a).
